Comparing Communities

Big Community or Small? Finding What Feels Like Home

Some people thrive in a lively, active community with lots going on. Others do better somewhere quieter and more personal. Neither is better — it's about what feels right for your loved one.

When you start looking at senior living communities, nobody warns you that you'll eventually have to answer the question: big or small? It can feel like a trick question. What does size even have to do with it? Actually, quite a bit. But not in the way you might think.

Small Communities — Where Everybody Knows Your Name

A smaller community — typically under 50 residents — tends to feel less like a facility and more like a home. The staff know everyone. The dining room feels like a family dinner. The hallways are quiet. If your loved one has always preferred close relationships over crowds, or if they're leaving a home they've lived in for decades, a smaller setting can make the whole transition feel a lot gentler.

The honest tradeoff: there's less variety. Fewer dining options, a smaller social pool, and sometimes fewer organized activities. But for the right person, that simplicity is exactly the point.

Larger Communities — More Energy, More Options

A larger community — 50 residents or more — has more going on. Multiple places to eat, fitness centers, clubs, classes, and a bigger mix of people to connect with. For someone who is social and thrives when there's always something happening, a larger community can feel genuinely exciting rather than overwhelming.

The honest tradeoff: it can feel busier and more institutional. Staff may not know every resident by name. Some people love that energy. Others find it exhausting.

The Question That Actually Helps

Forget the amenities list for a moment and think about your loved one's personality. Has she always preferred small gatherings or big parties? Does he light up around lots of people or recharge in quiet? Where does she feel most like herself?

That question will tell you more than any brochure.

And If You're Not Sure — That's Okay Too

Choosing "doesn't matter" is a completely valid answer. It just means we'll show you a range of communities and you can get a feel for the difference when you visit. Sometimes you don't know what feels right until you walk through the door.
